Oliver Fontany is a neurodiverse artist living and working in Sydney, Australia. His current artistic practice is facilitated at Studio ARTES.

Fontany’s practice is vast, spanning a variety of media including drawing, painting collage, and installation, linked by his autobiographical approach to art making. Central to Fontany’s artistic language is his bold, linear style and liberal use of colour. With brush or pen and a heavy hand, Fontany carves bold expressive lines into his work, tracing each shape he sees, creating a rigid and intricate maze of outlines, contrasting his playful, free-flowing application of colour. When creating, Fontany prefers to use photographic reference, which he follows precisely, transforming them through his unique approach to depicting colour and form into eclectic, one-of-a-kind pieces.

Fontany weaves these pillars of his artistic style together to create expansive landscapes and deeply profound autobiographical paintings, exploring themes ranging from the importance of family and friends in his life, to specific moments of joy and significance in his day, such as the ritual surrounding watching his favourite television shows, or the sights, sounds and smells that make certain views, walks or places memorable for him.

Fontany has exhibited in numerous group shows and prizes throughout NSW, and his works are held in private collections across Australia. In 2021, Fontany was the winner of the Macability Award through Fisher’s Ghost Art Prize, the People’s Choice Award through the Calleen Art Award, and placed first in the Connect, Collaborate, Celebrate exhibition hosted by Willoughby City Council.
