Expression of interest for Harmony Day event
Intergenerational Harmony Day activities
Willoughby City Council is inviting community members from diverse cultural backgrounds to express their interest in participating in our Intergenerational Harmony Day event.
The Intergenerational Harmony Day event aligns with the Willoughby Community Strategic Plan, particularly Council’s commitment to:
- Building a connected, inclusive, and welcoming community.
- Supporting social cohesion and cultural diversity.
- Encouraging intergenerational connection and participation.
- Promoting active, healthy, and engaged communities across all ages.
While Intergenerational Harmony Day was delivered last year, the activities in 2026 are different and have been designed to strengthen understanding, belonging and shared community experiences between young people, multicultural communities and older residents.
Activities for 2026
Activity 1: World Map – Our journeys
Participants will place pins or stickers on a large world map to share personal or family journeys. This may include:
- Country of birth.
- Migration pathways.
- Travel experiences within Australia or overseas.
Participants are invited to share a short story about their journey, encouraging respectful intergenerational dialogue and a deeper understanding of the diverse experiences that contribute to Willoughby’s multicultural community. A short, optional question-and-answer discussion may follow.
This activity supports Council’s goals around belonging, inclusion and celebrating diversity.
Activity 2: Intergenerational dance exchange
Seniors and students will take turns demonstrating simple cultural dance steps, followed by dancing together as a group. The activity promotes cultural expression, movement, and shared enjoyment in an inclusive and welcoming environment.
No preparation or performance experience is required.
This activity supports Council’s focus on active ageing, youth engagement, wellbeing and community participation.
Who can participate
- Seniors and community members from multicultural backgrounds.
- Residents interested in sharing stories, culture or lived experiences.
- Previous participants are welcome, noting that activities this year differ from previous years.
