An exhibition of drawing by Mikhaela Davis.
The artworks exhibited in Bloom by visual artist Mikhaela Davis are a celebration of mindful living: centred on the stoic principles of overcoming adversity, and driven by the question of 'how to live'. Positioning the profound spiritual experience of accepting affliction, the body of work highlights a universal quest for presence and inner grace.
Presence and pure grace stems from an existential sense of belonging, combined with the notion that adversity is simply an opportunity to display our highest self. Expressed through the elegance of graphite, soft movement of line and form, and complementary archetypes, there is a profound romance between the graphite medium and quality paper. Graphite allows the artist an infinite freedom to experiment with fine lines and silky gradients of tones, where a beautifully transcendent dance is played out between artist and paper. As an underrated medium, drawing is often criticised for its limitations. However, these constraints push the artist to greater lengths that might not have otherwise been explored, creating a beautiful metaphor in and of itself.
