Empowering Year 5 children to create and share stories about local wildlife, fostering a deeper connection with nature. Through research, writing and illustration, students highlight the vital role of native animal species for a healthy eco-system. 

  • Year 5 students only.
  • Council educators deliver incursions to communicate the year’s book theme and build knowledge on the unique behaviours, features and habitats of the animal species chosen for each school.
  • Selected student stories and artworks are published in a storybook and invited to the book launch held in November.
  • Previous years’ books can be purchased for $10 or borrowed at any Council Library or local primary school.  Selected editions can be downloaded below.
  • 2026 book theme is the species that live in the ground layer of habitat(PDF, 264KB)
