Has your cardiovascular fitness decreased? Do you have concerns about your physical health as a result of the lockdown? It’s time to do something about it and join Love to Ride’s Biketober Willoughby. It’s a free month-long national competition this October to get more people riding bikes and there are some great prizes to win.

Some of the major prizes include a bike of your choice (roadbike, mountain bike or eBike) valued at $2,000, bike accessories and a $1,000 local bike shop gift card. For a chance to win one of the great prizes, you need to register on the Biketober website before 30 September.

To participate in Biketober, it doesn't matter if you ride every day or if you haven't been on a bike in years. You can ride anytime within the current COVID restrictions.

Last year, more than 4,200 people took part in New South Wales. The all-time Biketober stats for participation in NSW include 1,381 workplaces, 19,908 people, 6,057 new riders and 31,870,955kms have been ridden.

This year is set to be bigger and better and we encourage your friends, family and colleagues to join.

How it works

  • Register for free at www.lovetoride.net/willoughby
  • Your points help us climb the Willoughby leaderboard
  • Start logging your bike rides to earn riding points
  • To score big, earn encourager points. Encourage other people to register and log a ride. If they add you as their encourager, you’ll score 50 or 100 points
  • More points mean more chances to climb the leaderboards and win prizes!

Willoughby City Council’s Mayor Gail Giles-Gidney is a recreational rider after recently purchasing an eBike.

Mayor Giles-Gidney said, “eBiking is an enjoyable way to get fit and it’s great for the environment as it reduces your carbon footprint. We have many shared bike paths in Willoughby including the newly opened path connecting Broadcast Way with Herbert St, Artarmon.

“There’s also the Northern Sydney Cycling Guide + Map that features some great routes through our Local Government Area and nearby suburbs.”

Two other new Willoughby City Council bicycle projects are in the pipeline to link Chatswood with St Leonards. The first link is improvements to the 3.3km shared pedestrian and bicycle path on Pacific Highway between Mowbray Rd, Chatswood and Herbert St, St Leonards. The second link is a 2.5km cycleway from Chatswood CBD to St Leonards CBD.
