The Concourse Concert Hall, Chatswood

One of the most sought after violinists in the Australia, Alexandre Da Costa, will join Grammy-nominated Chief Conductor and Artistic Director Dr Nicholas Milton AM and the Willoughby Symphony Orchestra as they round off the 2019 symphony season with a bang in a titanic concert featuring Mahler’s Symphony No 1 in D major.

Mahler’s epic first symphony is a youthful work of genius alive with a superabundance of emotions, musical ideas and the pulsating beat of fervent passion. This ceaseless ebb and flow is mirrored in a wide spectrum of musical styles, from child-like simplicity to transcendent profundity – folksong beside fugue, parody beside pathos, tempest beside tranquillity. Mahler himself wrote, “My First Symphony will be something of which the world has never heard the like before.”

Canadian violinist Alexandre Da Costa obtained a Master’s Degree in violin and first prize from the Conservatoire de Musique du Québec before going on to study in Madrid at the Escuela Superior de Musica Reina Sofia with legendary violin teacher Zakhar Bron. He has appeared as guest soloist and conductor in more than 2000 concerts in over 30 countries with the most renowned orchestras and conductors.

Artistic Director and Conductor of Symphonic Orchestra of Longueuil (Canada), Mr Da Costa joins Willoughby Symphony to perform one of the perennially evergreen violin concertos of the romantic period, Bruch’s Concerto No 1 in G Minor.

The concert opens with Beethoven’s Egmont Overture, written as part of a set of incidental music for a play by Goethe, which deals with the theme of political oppression overthrown in the name of freedom – the triumph of good over evil.

The musical stars of the Willoughby Symphony Orchestra and Alexandre Da Costa are sure to shine in this dazzling showpiece at Chatswood’s state-of-the-art performance venue, The Concourse.
