Willoughby Symphony performs a MIRACLE
26 May 2017
Saturday 17 June 7pm & Sunday 18 June 2pm
The Concourse Concert Hall, Chatswood
Internationally acclaimed percussionist Claire Edwardes guest stars in the Willoughby Symphony’s MIRACLE concert, a glittering performance of beloved works by Haydn, Mendelssohn and 2017 Composer-in-Residence, Dr Daniel Rojas.
Under the baton of celebrated conductor, Carolyn Watson, the concert will open with Haydn’s Miracle Symphony, named for the legend of the work’s premiere when a chandelier fell from the concert hall ceiling and narrowly missed the audience! Following with Rojas’ intoxicating Concerto for Marimba and Orchestra, Claire will demonstrate her superb skill as she navigates the work’s intricate demands with aplomb.
Internationally acclaimed percussion soloist, chamber musician and Artistic Director of Ensemble Offspring, Claire has been described by the press as a ‘sorceress of percussion’. The recipient of the 2013 prestigious Australia Council Music Fellowship, Claire is the first person to take home the APRA AMCOS Art Music Award for Excellence by an Individual three times.
Dr Daniel Rojas is an award-winning composer specialising in the Latin American aesthetic. Chilean born, Daniel draws from his heritage and a broad musical palette that includes Latin American indigenous, folk, classical and popular traditions, as well as Western classical and jazz techniques.
“Concerts with the Willoughby Symphony Orchestra and Choir are extraordinary events that bring intense beauty into the lives of our audiences and I am constantly reminded of this when conducting this sensational group of musicians,” said Dr Nicholas Milton AM.
