$2.5M upgrades to Chatswood High School Oval

29 November 2016

A Willoughby City Council and NSW Department of Education collaboration will see upgrades worth $2.5M to Chatswood High School Oval commence mid December.

This follows Willoughby Council last night (Council meeting of Monday 28 November) giving tenderer approval for the installation of a new synthetic sportsground surface.

The works, funded from Council’s 2016/2017 budget (Voluntary Planning Agreement funds), will include:

  • renovation of existing change rooms for public use
  • installation of the synthetic sportsground surface to a full size playing field
  • upgraded cricket practice nets, cricket wicket, asphalt multi-sport courts and new floodlighting
  • renovation of the western car park for public use

Managed and maintained by Council for the last 30 years, the sportsground is one of Willoughby’s busiest. It serves Chatswood High School students during school hours, and is used for community cricket in summer and district football training and competition in winter.

The conversion from turf to synthetic grass will allow the oval to take up to 70 playing hours per week in all conditions while other ovals are ‘rested’ due to rain or general wear and tear. This will provide local sports groups with an invaluable facility that will also attract sports competitions and other events into the area.

“This is a great joint project between Council and the Department of Education that benefits both Chatswood High School students and our local sporting community. The upgrades are much welcomed and will help address the increasing demand for quality sports facilities across the lower North Shore,” said Willoughby Mayor Gail Giles-Gidney.

Council’s focus on improving and maintaining recreation facilities was also seen with Council endorsing playground upgrades at Campbell Park Playground ($150,000) and Greville Street Reserve Playground ($80,000) in Chatswood. The improvements include new play equipment, seating and refurbishments to barbeque areas.
