A menagerie of native animals descends on The Concourse as light art work MarZoopials 2021 by Sydney-based artist Zara Pasfield lights up each night.

Featuring playful koalas, cheeky cockatoos and curious kangaroos, MarZoopials 2021 is a celebration of our unique and enduring native wildlife so ravaged by bush fires and floods. It’s also a reminder to cherish them.

Around Australia, the native wildlife will gradually regenerate in the wake of our devastating fires and floods. It is this courageous and tenacious Australian attitude that helps drive the mammoth task of rebuilding for the rest of Australia.

MarZoopials 2021 stand tall as a symbol of courage and strength for our fire ravaged and flood stricken communities.

When the night falls, the animals, constructed from Australian, 100% carbon neutral polypropylene, come back to life! Taking over the exterior of The Concourse, the animals get up to mischief while they explore.

Australian native wildlife and the bushfires

Over 1 billion animals nationally were killed in last year’s bushfires with 800,000 of these being from NSW. Thousands more were injured.

Around 6 million hectares of habitat was affected by bushfire which means that those that survived the fires face habitat loss, food shortages, increased vulnerability to feral animals as well as further climate change impacts.

Coming on the back of the severe drought, the bushfires resulted in a ‘perfect storm’ for our native animals.

Chatswood is surrounded by incredible bush land throughout the City of Willoughby. If you love Marzoopials why not enjoy one of the many stunning bush land walks to see what native animals you can spot.
