Are you ready for an emergency? Do you have a plan if you’re hit with a bad storm, fire, flood or earthquake? Willoughby City Council is encouraging residents to prepare for a disaster or a time of crisis by completing an emergency plan on the Get Prepared app.

As part of Red Cross Emergency Ready Week, 20 – 27 September 2021, Willoughby City Council is supporting citizens to become more resilient to disasters or emergencies.

How people react to stress during and after an emergency can have a huge impact on how they cope and subsequently recover. It is important to have a written emergency plan in case you forget what you need to do or have difficulty thinking clearly in an emergency.

The Get Prepared app is free and easy to use, a one-stop tool to help you prepare for any type of emergency. You can establish a quick and easy network of support with three emergency contacts, review the risks relevant to where they live, create an emergency plan checklist, save the plan as a PDF to be printed and shared with others.

The app helps you accomplish simple tasks to make you and your loved ones safer and protect the things that matter the most to you. The Get Prepared app builds on many years of work by the Red Cross to help people prepare both physically and psychologically for an emergency or disaster.

As a participating Council in the Resilient Sydney program, Willoughby City Council is collaborating with councils across Sydney to create a metropolis that is connected, inclusive and resilient.

Willoughby Council has created new resources to help people plan better for emergencies, particularly within CALD (culturally and linguistically diverse) communities. They include leaflets in simplified Chinese and Korean and a short video with subtitles.

Willoughby City Council has prepared a draft Resilient Willoughby Strategy and Action Plan which outlines how Council and its partners can support the community to withstand challenges ranging from the COVID-19 pandemic to on-going climate change impacts.

Some of the other emergency resources on Resilient Willoughby include information about:

• COVID-19
• Extreme heat
• Climate Change
• Flooding and Storms
• Protecting Your Home
• Bushfires and Smoke

Remember, people recover faster if they are prepared for an emergency. Download the Get Prepared app now.
