Local cyclists will be able to take part in a fun challenge and get their very own bike and caffeine fix as part of Willoughby City Council’s Biketober campaign, which aims to accelerate the many benefits of pedal power.

Willoughby City Mayor Tanya Taylor said Council would aim to see 500 new cyclists register for Biketober next month.

“This is an ambitious target, but an achievable one given the broad health, social and environmental benefits of cycling,” Mayor Taylor said.

“Riding a bike is a great way to increase your cardio fitness during weekdays and to have fun riding with your family or friends on the weekends.

“It’s also an environmentally sustainable mode of transport and will help our local community achieve our goal of Net Zero emissions by 2040.”

Willoughby City Council will launch Biketober on 1 October with a free Bike Repair Café workshop session at Artarmon Reserve, near the lower carpark area from 9am to 11am.

This event will be an opportunity to get a free bike tune-up and a free coffee while in the company of like-minded cycling enthusiasts.

Cyclists are required to register for the event and are encouraged to get in quick due to expected high demand.

Artarmon Reserve is in close proximity to multiple cycling tracks, which means cyclists can discover some hidden bike routes they never knew existed. Take a look at Council’s map on the website.

Bike North representatives will be on the ground to provide information, support and inspiration for new and experienced riders.

As part of Biketober, cyclists are being encouraged to register to compete against other individuals, groups, social clubs and workplaces.

Individuals or teams which complete the most number of kilometres, and therefore go to the top of the leader board, will win prizes including gift vouchers and new bikes.

Over the last two years, some 33 workplaces and 677 people from Willoughby have taken part in Biketober, and during this pedalled more than 1.3 million kilometres.
