The next election for the Council of Willoughby City Council will be held on Saturday, 4 December 2021. 

Our current Councillors will continue to hold their civic offices until the elections. The Mayor will continue to hold office until the results of the election are declared.

Local Government elections in New South Wales are usually held every four years. However, the elections planned for 2020 were postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Do you want to work at the Council election

The 2021 election for the City of Willoughby will be managed by the NSW Electoral Commission.

People who would like to work at the December local government elections can now submit an application through the Commission’s 'expression of interest’ website.

Applicants can work on the day (Saturday, 4 December) in a polling place, or for longer periods in a returning office or in one of the pre-poll voting centres.

How to vote before election day

To reduce risks related to COVID-19, some changes to voting options have been introduced for the 2021 Local Government elections only. This is to allow all electors to vote early in-person during the pre-poll voting period.

Eligibility criteria for pre-poll (early voting) and postal voting have changed. Additional criteria have been introduced for the 2021 Local Government elections to make it easier for electors to vote with consideration of the COVID-19 pandemic.  


Pre-poll voting will be available from Monday 22 November to Friday 3 December 2021.

You will no longer need a valid reason to be able to vote at a pre-poll location. Pre-polling is encouraged to avoid crowding on election day.

Pre-poll locations and voting times will be available on the NSW Electoral Commission website when they are confirmed.

The City of Willoughby Local Government Area Returning Office is located at 501 Victoria Avenue, Chatswood NSW 2067.

Use the address search, to find the council or ward page that matches your address. If you have moved to a new area since you last voted, you should check your enrolment and update your address if necessary.

Online and operator assisted voting (iVote)

Recent changes to legislation has made iVote (online voting) available for some electors at elections administered by the NSW Electoral Commission. iVote allows eligible electors to vote online or over the phone, with the help of a call centre operator.

Applications for iVote have opened and will be available until 1:00pm on Saturday, 4 December 2021.

Voting using iVote has also opened and is available until 6:00pm on Saturday, 4 December 2021.

Postal voting

Postal vote applications are now open.

You can apply online, or download and return an application form. Visit the Online Postal Vote Application page to get started.

You are able to use postal voting if you:

  • are a permanent or temporary resident in a hospital, nursing home, retirement village or similar facility
  • are self isolating because of COVID-19 related reasons
  • reasonably believe that attending a polling place on election day will pose a risk to the health or safety of yourself or people around you, because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
