Second Hand Saturday

Second Hand SaturdaySecond Hand Saturday is a program which provides an opportunity to promote community spirit whilst reducing the amount of waste going to landfill. Australians are the second highest producers of waste in the world, with each person generating an average of 1 tonne per year. You can help reduce the amount of waste going to landfill by:

  • Holding a garage sale before placing unwanted items out for the General Clean Up Collection
  • Tracking down a bargain at garage sales held in your local area

Garage sales are held within individual households on the Saturday before your area's General Clean-Up Collection. To host a garage sale for Second Hand Saturday, fill in our online form or phone 9777 7730 and we'll advertise your address on this page and in the North Shore Times. Council will also send you a poster to display at the front of your property on the day, and information and advice for running a successful garage sale. This service is provided FREE of charge.

Any items left over at the end of the day can then be placed on the kerb for collection the following week. Material must not be placed on the kerb for more than one week prior to the collection day.

When is my Second Hand Saturday date?

All collection dates and Second Hand Saturday dates are available under Clean Up Dates. Simply type in your address or street name and look for the date next to “Second Hand Saturday”.

Things you need to know

  • You must have a General Clean-up collection due the week immediately following your Second Hand Saturday to hold a garage sale.
  • Each address will have two opportunities per year to hold a Second Hand Saturday sale, as there are two General Clean-up collections per year for every address.
  • If you live in a multi unit dwelling, get permission from your body corporate first.

How to register

To register, fill in our online form or phone 9777 7730 by Monday of the week prior to your proposed garage sale.

Tips for a successful sale

  • Place items in groups to make them easier to find, especially if some items are for sale and others are to give away.
  • Make sure all items are within the boundaries of your property. Unsold and unwanted items can be placed on the kerbside at the end of the day, ready for the General Clean-Up Collection. Normal conditions apply.
  • Have plenty of change ready, particularly small notes and coins.
  • Supervise your garage sale at all times.
  • Label all items with realistic prices and expect shoppers to bargain.
