NSW Health estimates that approximately 50% of needles and syringes used for self-injection each year end up in local council waste and recycling services. To help combat this issue, Willoughby City Council has teamed up with pharmacists in the local area to provide needle collection facilities for used sharps - syringes, needles and lancets.
The Community Sharps Management Program aims to ensure that residents have access to safe disposal options, significantly reducing the number of sharps entering the general waste stream and minimising the possibility of needle stick injuries.
Free community sharps disposal facilities are available at:
All sharps must be contained in an approved sharps container or a suitable puncture proof container.
These bins are not provided for commercial sharps generators.
If you discover a needle in a public place contact the Needle Cleanup Hotline on 1800 633 353.
