Chemical CleanOut

Willoughby City Council’s annual Household Chemical CleanOut collection on Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 March was a great success. More than 1,323 households dropped off dangerous chemicals, including:

  • 40,425kgs paint (73% of all material collected)
  • 2,975 kgs of oil
  • 3,805 lead acid batteries
  • 1,388 kgs propane gas bottles
  • 1,120 kgs of various poisons

The event collected more than 56 tonnes of potentially hazardous household chemicals. Many chemicals are recycled. Others need to be disposed of correctly and safely; if sent to landfill, DDT and toxic elements such as mercury, cadmium and lead could leach into the environment.

Acceptable products include:

  • Paint and paint-related products (thinners, strippers, varnishes etc)
  • Pesticides, herbicides and poisons (fungicides, baits/poisons, wood preservatives)
  • Solvents and household cleaners
  • Motor oils, fuels and fluids
  • Batteries
  • Gas bottles
  • Fire extinguishers
  • Pool chemicals
  • Acids and alkalis
  • Hobby chemicals (photography chemicals etc)
  • Fluorescent tubes
