Artistic Director’s Message
The remarkable Willoughby Symphony has been hailed as one of Australia’s most astonishing and unique orchestras and it continues to be a profound honour for me to make music with these thrilling artists who share such an inspiring vision for our community. Concerts with the Willoughby Symphony Orchestra and Choir are, invariably, extraordinary performance events that breathe intense beauty into the lives of our audience. On stage in our ravishing Concert Hall at The Concourse, the ardently passionate instrumentalists of the Willoughby Symphony Orchestra illuminate their elation in music making with vibrant commitment.
I am overjoyed to present the Willoughby Symphony’s 2019 season, ‘Rhapsodic Journey.’ My musicians and I are so excited that we will share these wonderful concerts with you. Our magical odyssey promises so many transcendent and inexpressibly beautiful moments, and we will marvel with you at sublime mysteries that will unfold in the endless miracle of music.
Our spectacular Gala season opener is dedicated to the glorious melodies and elegant ravishment of Vienna. In subsequent concerts, we will enthrall you with a treasure of incomparable symphonic masterpieces, including Beethoven’s timeless Pastoral Symphony and Elgar’s beloved Enigma Variations. We will revel in the delicacy of Ravel, immerse ourselves in the poetry of Liszt, and celebrate the exuberance of Gershwin. We interpret works of Brahms and Dvořák, and our monumental symphonic season closes with Mahler’s epic First Symphony. And you will surely be dazzled by the virtuosity of our exquisite soloists throughout the year.
I could not be more delighted that one of Australia’s emerging composer superstars, Kate Moore, has agreed to be our 2019 composer-in-residence. Kate’s works have been performed in venues including Amsterdam’s Concertgebouw, New York’s Carnegie Hall and The Sydney Opera House and at major festivals across the globe. We present two major premieres, including a new Piano Concerto specially commissioned by the Willoughby Symphony.
Our eternally popular and always completely sold-out Last Night of the Proms delivers colossal pageantry and unbridled delight, and as always, we promise to surprise and astound you with the 2019 edition of this extravaganza. Presenting orchestral concerts requires a great deal of behind-the-scenes effort, and the musicians and I are endlessly grateful to the terrific directors and support staff at Council who are committed to our shared vision and who make our musical mission possible: our very special thanks to the exceptional Melanie Smith and Annette Brown.
Friends, we look forward to having you join the Willoughby Symphony family for our 2019 season.
