Important Information - Willoughby City Library exit from Shorelink

Willoughby Library has been in a consortium agreement with Lane Cove, Manly, Mosman, and North Sydney (Stanton) libraries - Shorelink.
As a result of Willoughby Library withdrawing from this agreement, there will be some changes to services and procedures for our members, which will also affect the members of the remaining Shorelink libraries.
These changes will come in to effect from 22 November 2017.

What will stay the same?

  • Willoughby Library members will continue to enjoy access to the collections of Chatswood, Artarmon, Castle Cove, Naremburn, Northbridge and West Chatswood Libraries, as well as the digital library collections available through our subscriptions.
  • Willoughby Library members may continue to request items which are not held by Willoughby Library from other lending libraries across Australia through our Inter-Library Loan service. The minimum charge for this service remains at $3.00.
  • Willoughby Library members and visitors can continue to engage in our growing range of events and programs, and utilise the facilities available across the Willoughby Library service.
  • Willoughby Library staff will continue their ongoing commitment in providing excellent customer service to our members and visitors, and provide high level support in the provision of library services.

What will change?

  • Borrowing from Shorelink libraries
  • Willoughby Library members will no longer be able to use their Willoughby Library card to borrow directly at Lane Cove, Manly, Mosman or North Sydney (Stanton) libraries. Customers may join as members at these libraries as well as Willoughby to continue accessing their collections directly. Alternatively, customers may request items from these libraries through the Inter-Library Loan service. The minimum charge for this service will remain at $3.00.

  • Returning items
  • Willoughby Library members must return items borrowed on their card to any Willoughby Library branch. Items returned to non-Willoughby libraries cannot be registered as returned until they reach a Willoughby Library, which may result in overdue fees applying. Items borrowed on a Shorelink Library card will no longer be accepted for return at Willoughby Libraries.

  • Searching for items
  • The Willoughby Library catalogue will have a fresh new look, with a range of great new features including a new mobile app. Customers will be able to search for items held within the Willoughby Library branch network of Chatswood, Artarmon, Castle Cove, Naremburn, Northbridge and West Chatswood. Customers can also search the catalogues of other selected libraries directly through the new catalogue, or ask Library staff for help.

  • Shorelink Library members
  • Customers who have a library card from Lane Cove, Manly, Mosman or North Sydney (Stanton) libraries will no longer be able to use their card to borrow items directly from a Willoughby Library. These customers are invited to join Willoughby Library in addition to their Shorelink library membership to continue accessing our collections directly. Membership is free. Alternatively, Shorelink members may request Willoughby Library items through their own Library’s Inter-Library Loan service (charges may apply).

What improvements will I see?

The decision to leave Shorelink forms part of Council’s organisational-wide approach to improved service delivery and reformed business processes, enabling Council to have a more tailored approach to meet the aspirations of the community by delivering more library programs and building on social, capital and digital literacy.

There will be greater focus on the priorities of Willoughby Library patrons through:

1. Item purchasing

Willoughby Library staff will now be able to select the items that are purchased for its collection, rather than it being a consortium decision.

2. A new online catalogue

The brand new Willoughby online catalogue will have many new features including:

  • The ability to create alerts for new items that have been added to the collection and recommendations for similar authors;
  • Downloading eBook, eMagazine and eAudiobook titles directly (currently not available on the Shorelink network);
  • A catalogue search that does not retrieve a result can be done on other library catalogues without re-keying the search;
  • Customers can now opt to receive SMS alerts when their reservations are available;
  • Customers can now choose when they want their courtesy reminder for items that are due back – either 3, 5 or 7 days before the items are due (currently it is set at one day);
  • A mobile app will also be available soon for patrons to search the catalogue at their own convenience anywhere, anytime.
3. Improved download speed and reliability of wifi

Public internet access, including free wifi at Council’s libraries, is currently managed by Shorelink. The decision to leave the Shorelink network has provided the opportunity for Council to gain greater control over the internet provision at our libraries, ensuring that the expectations of library patrons can be better met.

FAQs - What do these changes mean for me?

1. Will I still be able to borrow from Lane Cove, Manly, Mosman and North Sydney (Stanton) Libraries?

You will need to join as a member at one of these libraries to be able to borrow their items directly. You can have a Shorelink card in addition to your Willoughby card. However if you are unable to visit these libraries, you may request their items through our Inter-Library Loan service. The cost for this service remains the same as a previous request/reservation from a Shorelink library - $3.

2. Can I still search for items held across the remaining Shorelink Libraries?

You can search any public library catalogue through their online catalogue. However, Shorelink items will no longer appear in the Willoughby Library catalogue. See our Can’t find it? page for links to the catalogues of nearby public libraries. You may request items from other libraries across Australia through our Inter-Library Loan service.

3. What happens if I return my Willoughby items to another Library service?

These items will not be returned from your library account until they reach Willoughby Library Service, which may result in overdue fees applying. Check your items carefully to ensure you are returning the correct items to the correct library. All Willoughby Library items will be stamped or tagged with Willoughby City Library branding. 24 hour returns facilities are available at all Willoughby Library branches.

4. Why did Willoughby Council choose to withdraw from Shorelink?

The Shorelink Consortium is a costly way for Willoughby to provide library services that do not cater for the specific needs of the Willoughby community. Willoughby Council chose to withdraw from Shorelink in order to deliver library services tailored specifically to the needs of the Willoughby community. The decision followed careful consideration and independent studies into the future of libraries.

5. What is an Inter-Library Loan?

An Inter-Library Loan is a service which allows customers of one library to borrow items that are owned by another library. The fee for this service starts from $3 and can go up to $16.50 or more for items from Universities and other charging libraries.

6. When will the new Willoughby Library catalogue be ready to search?

Our new catalogue will go live on Thursday 30 November for you to start exploring. Find out more about the exciting features of our new Library catalogue. Please note: From 22-30 November, there will be a transition period where some online library services will be offline. We appreciate your patience during this time while we improve our systems.
