Investigate an ENIGMA with Willoughby Symphony Orchestra

Saturday 27 July, 7pm & Sunday 28 July, 2pm
The Concourse Concert Hall, Chatswood

Willoughby Symphony’s ENIGMA will see its inimitable Chief Conductor and Artistic Director, Dr Nicholas Milton AM lead the orchestra for a performance of one of the most glorious English works of the symphonic repertoire, Elgar’s Enigma Variations. The concert also features a performance by the astounding Australian trumpet superstar Rainer Saville. The program opens with Gershwin’s intoxicating An American in Paris.

A set of orchestral variations on an original theme, Elgar’s Enigma Variations, op 36 is dedicated to his ‘friends within’, each variation being a musical sketch of one of his close circle of friends. The work is most famously identified by its moving Nimrod variation, which as a stand-alone movement is universally recognised and beloved. Hearing Nimrod as the centrepiece of a complete performance of the variations is always an enthralling experience.

Mr Saville returns to his native land from an auspicious position in New Zealand to perform Henri Tomasi’s Trumpet Concerto. Nephew of Willoughby City Councillor Lynne Saville, Mr Saville graduated from the Australian National Academy of Music before joining the New York Philharmonic Orchestra as part of its Global Academy Fellowship Program. Tomasi’s Trumpet Concerto is a fittingly virtuosic work for this amazing performer.

Gershwin’s enchanting An American in Paris is an incredibly illustrative tone poem which sparkles with ingenuity and wit, and as performed by the brilliant musicians of the Willoughby Symphony Orchestra, this will surely be an unforgettable and enlivening interpretation.
