Willoughby City Council deals up a new engagement experience

23 March 2018

Willoughby City’s Council’s creative and interactive approach to community consultation saw business groups, sporting clubs and families offer their ideas for the new community strategic plan on Saturday.

Around 90 people from a broad range of stakeholder groups converged on The Civic Pavilion at The Concourse, Chatswood to guide the community strategic plan that will form the basis of council’s directions for the City and community for the next 10 years.

The day encouraged participants to prioritise ideas and themes that had been submitted to Council by community members over the past three months of consultation, and to add new ones.

The comments so far were condensed into five high level council goals: green; connected & inclusive; effective & accountable; liveable; prosperous & vibrant Willoughby City.

Even the kids were invited to get involved by building their idea of the future out of cardboard and other recycled materials.

Resident and business person Max Underhill said: “It was encouraging to see a large number of participants at the workshop including residents, business people, community organisations, interest groups and Councillors and Council staff.”

“I am confident the workshop on Saturday will assist in establishing the Council’s destiny.”

Participants prioritised goals listed on sets of playing cards and were encouraged to use wild cards for new suggestions and to generate debate.

The event was the last of the engagement activities over four months:

  • 1000+ people attended 15 pop-up stalls across the LGA
  • 3000+ opinions, thoughts and ideas received
  • 2,600+ visits to the webpage
  • 100,000+ reached via social media with 500+ comments, likes and shares

It’s not too late to share what the future looks like to you online at https://www.haveyoursaywilloughby.com.au/our-future-willoughby

From here Council will analyse all the great ideas, thoughts and opinions and come back to the community in April with a draft Community Strategic Plan. This will be the community’s final chance to comment on the Plan.
