Acclaimed Congolese-Australian playwright, Future D. Fidel will speak about his powerful debut novel Prize Fighter as part of Chatswood Library’s Talks@Willoughby program.

Prize Fighter is the story of Isa, a Congolese refugee living in the suburbs of Australia. Now a brilliant boxer, Isa’s most difficult opponent isn't in the ring - it's the terrors of his past that he must fight to overcome.

At ten years old, Isa's life changed forever when he had to choose between death and becoming a boy soldier. After years enduring the horrors of war, Isa is finally given a chance of freedom as a refugee in Australia and a promising career as a talented boxer - but his demons have a power all of their own...

Future D. Fidel was born in Uvira in the Democratic Republic of Congo and suffered the loss of his parents early in life when the country descended into lawlessness after the death of President Mobutu. Forced to flee as a stowaway to Tanzania, Future spent eight years in a camp before becoming a refugee in Australia, where he now lives with his brother, sister and nephews.

A playwright with a Bachelor degree in Electrical engineering, Future is also a gospel artist and helped form the Fimbo Boys, an African modern dance and music group that supports young people from Refugee backgrounds. Future's debut work Prize Fighter was one of the main events in the Roundhouse Theatre at La Boite Theatre Company and was featured in the Brisbane Festival.

Lindfield Bookshop will have copies of the author’s book available for sale on the day. Bookings are essential, please visit http://www.willoughby.nsw.gov.au/library/events/talks@willoughby/
