Willoughby City Council invites you to a preview of award winning documentary movie BackTrack Boys on 27 September at the Zenith Theatre. The exclusive preview and fundraiser, before it appears in cinemas, will also feature a Q&A with director Catherine Scott.

BackTrack Boys follows group of troubled boys are on a perilous course towards jail until they meet up with the rough talking, free-wheeling jackaroo, Bernie Shakeshaft, and hit the road with his legendary dog jumping team.

This observational documentary, filmed over two years, follows boys in a youth program that Bernie runs from a shed on the outskirts of rural town in Australia. On the road, the boys find their voice, make great friendships and the dogs become national champions. But as the boy’s sleep under the stars at night the trauma is never too far away. They must constantly step up and push themselves, support each other and some days can be hard.

This inspiring coming of age story reveals the challenges and triumphs these boys face as they try to find their place in the world, and the dogs that help tame their wild ways.

Ms Scott has directed and produced documentaries in Australia, Canada, France and the USA for over 20 years, including the award-winning film Scarlet Road (Sydney Film Festival 2011).

BackTrack Youth Works has been working with disadvantaged young people since 2006 and has helped over 1000 people get ‘back on track’. Armidale has seen a dramatic drop in the juvenile crime rate since the program was created 13 years ago. For further information visit www.backtrack.org.au.

BackTrack Boys has scooped the Audience Awards for Best Documentary at the Sydney Film Festival, Melbourne International Film Festival and the Stronger Than Fiction Film Festival in Canberra. The film will have its national release in selected cinema’s nationwide 25 October. For more information visit www.backtrackboys.com, #backtrackBoys.
