The Concourse Concert Hall, Chatswood
Willoughby Symphony’s PASSION concert will see Chief Conductor and Artistic Director, Dr Nicholas Milton AM joined by virtuoso pianist David Fung for a performance of Shostakovich’s second piano concerto. One of the composer’s most remarkable and intimately textured concertos, it is a work of dazzling virtuosity, poetry, passion, and elegant beauty.
Praised for his “ravishing and simply gorgeous” performances in the The Washington Post, pianist David Fung appears regularly with the world’s premier ensembles including the Cleveland, Israel Philharmonic, San Diego and Sydney Symphony Orchestras. He is widely recognized for interpretations that are elegant and refined, yet intensely poetic and uncommonly expressive.
The concert will commence with a magical portrayal of glimmering atmosphere in Composer-in-Residence, Nigel Westlake’s evocative and imaginatively conceived orchestral poem, Shimmering Blue.
Inarguably one of the great Australian composers of any generation, Nigel Westlake’s music has won countless awards and is performed all over the world. His success in writing unforgettable scores for films has been tremendous.
The concert will come to a powerful conclusion with Tchaikovsky’s Pathetique symphony, a work he composed from the abyss of personal and emotional despair… a symphonic utterance like no other in the repertoire that takes listeners on a heartbreaking internal odyssey of the human soul.
