Willoughby set to webcast Council Meetings
08 August 2017
Willoughby Council has adopted (Council Meeting of Monday 7 August) a revised Code of Meeting Practice that will allow for the implementation of webcasting of Council Meetings.
The provision of webcasting aims to improve public participation in Council meetings, public access to local government information, and increased transparency and confidence in Council decision making.
Community consultation during June and July confirmed no opposition to revising the Code of Meeting Practice, and a small number of public submissions were received in support.
Council has also received legal advice on mitigation measures in relation to Council’s liability around possible defamation issues.
Council will re-allocate $35,000 from first quarter budget review for 2017/2018 to implement the webcasting.
“Live webcasting of Council Meetings will allow for better public access and further facilitate openness and transparency, making Willoughby a more efficient and smarter council,” said Willoughby Mayor, Gail Giles-Gidney. “Webcasting of meetings is something many other Councils across Australia have already implemented and I’m pleased Willoughby will also now offer this to our community,” Mayor Gail added.
