You’ve heard of the Tour de France, but have you heard of Tour de Oz? Former sports journalist Bret Harris will tell the fascinating story of the first bicycle race around Australia at Chatswood Library on The Concourse this July.
In 1896, a bushman named Arthur Richardson set his sights on becoming the first person to ride around the vast island continent of Australia, some 18,507km. Heading north of Perth with nothing more than a swag and a pistol, Richardson would follow dirt tracks, cattle pads and stars in the night sky as he battled thirst, hunger, exhaustion and crocodile attacks to realise his dream.
But he also had competition...another party of cyclists with the same determination. Set against the fledging pastoralist empires of pre-Federation Australia, Tour de Oz is the extraordinarily true story of a remarkable race to 'circumcycle' the Australian continent - before it became a nation.
Bret Harris has more than three decades of experience covering a wide range of sports and is renowned for his news breaking and in-depth analysis of the game of rugby. Bret has also written several books on the sport.
Lindfield Bookshop will provide copies of the book for sale and signing at the venue.
