Learn how to stay safe in and around the water
21 April 2017
10am – 4pm, Sunday 30 April
Willoughby Leisure Centre
Small Street, Willoughby
Bring the whole family along to Willoughby Leisure Centre’s Family Water Safety Day and find out how to stay safe in and around the water.
With an aim to reduce the number of drowning deaths and incidents that happen every year, the Family Water Safety Day will provide a range of activities and information on the skills and knowledge needed in case of emergencies - particularly while swimming, boating and rock fishing.
Attendees on the day can:
• Participate in adult learn to swim classes and skills assessment
• Learn water survival techniques in a simulated rip current environment
• Listen to presentations about what to do in an emergency to prevent drowning
• Learn how to properly wear and use a lifejacket
• Purchase discounted life jackets through the Old4New Lifejacket Upgrade program
• Chat to experts at a range of information booths on the day
Information provided on rock fishing safety will be available in a range of different languages, including Chinese, Korean and Japanese. Royal Life Saving has identified that culturally and linguistically diverse communities, particularly from African and Asian countries, are at increased risk of drowning and aquatic injury compared to the rest of the Australian population.
“Swimming and fishing can be fun activities for the whole family to get involved in, but they can also be very dangerous if the proper precautions are not taken,” said Willoughby Mayor, Gail Giles-Gidney.
“Anyone can find themselves in difficulty when around water so I encourage everyone to come along to this event and learn what they can do to stay safe in and around the water,” she said.
This event is presented by Willoughby City Council, in partnership with the Department of Primary Industries, Transport for NSW and Maritime Services, Marine Rescue NSW, Recreational Fishing Alliance NSW, Surf Life Saving, AUSTSWIM and Asian Women at Work Inc.
