Beloved Australian artist Ken Done speaks about his vibrant memoir, A Life Coloured In, at Chatswood Library on The Concourse this April.
Ken has an extraordinary place in the hearts of Australians. His vivid, original art is widely recognised as holding a unique position in Australia’s cultural heritage - but what do we really know about the man behind the brush?
After a highly successful career as an art director and designer in New York, London and Sydney, Ken decided to devote himself to painting full time. His first solo exhibition was held in Sydney in 1980 and since then he has held more than 50 exhibitions in Australia, Europe, Japan and the USA and his works have been shown in the Archibald, Sulman, Wynne, Blake, and Dobell Prizes.
But there's more to Ken’s story than just commercial success: the sudden loss of profits from a lifetime's hard work and the resultant court case was closely followed by a shock cancer diagnosis. It was a dark time in his life, but the powerful paintings that came out of this bleak period have brought him high acclaim as one of our great artists.
From his studio on sparkling Sydney Harbour to the ochre tints of the outback or the luminous palette of tropical waters, Ken's artist's eye is ever drawn to beauty and colour.
Lindfield Bookshop will have copies of the author’s books available on the day for sale and signing.
