Local hero honoured with AM

Willoughby Citizen of the Year Noel Cislowski has been appointed as a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) for significant service to the performing arts, particularly to speech and drama, to music, and to a range of community organisations. 

Noel has been actively involved in the Willoughby community for the past 35 years, providing technical advice in planning of local performance spaces, hours of entertainment for senior citizens across the North Shore, as well as being a keen advocate for The Concourse. He has been involved in the Willoughby Symphony Orchestra for more than 30 years as Chairman and Deputy Chairman, has been an active Rotarian for 20 years and has been recognised through several awards for his service to the Rotary Club of Chatswood.

Noel’s extensive experience in the arts includes roles as president of the Music Teachers Association of NSW and of the Speech & Drama Association of NSW, Deputy Chairman of the NIDA Board of Studies, Director and Deputy Chairman of the Sydney Eisteddfod Committee, President of the Friends of Zenith Theatre, Chairman of High School Debating and Public Speaking, and National Co-ordinator of The Plain English Speaking Award. 

Noel was an advisor in Speech and Drama for the NSW Department of Education then Head of the Speech and Drama Branch, and Leader of the Creative and Practical Arts team in curriculum development. He has lectured in Drama, Music and Mathematics at various tertiary institutions including the Australian School of Pacific Administration, University of NSW, Macquarie University and the Australian Catholic University.

Noel has performed with theatre groups in Queensland and NSW, as well as the Sydney Symphony Orchestra in both singing and speaking solo roles. He has adjudicated major drama festivals across Australia and New Zealand, as well as speech, drama, vocal and instrumental adjudication. He is also a Life Member and Patron of the Speech & Drama Association of NSW and received the Red Cross Medal and the RSL Special Award. 

“On behalf of the Willoughby community I would like to congratulate Noel Cislowski - his appointment as a Member of the Order for Australia and as our 2016 Willoughby Citizen of the Year is testament for his outstanding service to the community and the performing arts,” said Willoughby Mayor, Gail Giles-Gidney. “Noel’s enthusiasm and commitment has made an incredible impact on our community and it is contributions such as his that has helped shape the City of Willoughby into the wonderful place that it is,” she said.
