Local Willoughby community theatre group, Epicentre Theatre Company will present Irish dramatist, Brian Friel’s 1990 play, Dancing at Lughnasa at the Zenith Theatre, Chatswood as part of this year’s Willoughby Spring Festival.

Known for producing plays that are challenging to perform and stimulating to view, Epicentre was founded by local theatre lovers in 1969, and has grown to become one of Sydney’s leading non-professional theatre companies.

The company’s newest production will transport theatre-goers back to 1930s Ireland. Loosely based on the lives of Friel’s mother and aunts, the play revolves around the Mundy family who eke out a living experiencing deprivation and depression.

In the final days of summer, love briefly seems possible for three of the five Mundy sisters, as the family welcomes home ill brother Jack, a priest who has been living as a missionary in an African leper colony. As summer fades, so does the chance for love and the family’s economic security.

Set in early August, around the festival of Lughnasa, the festival of the first fruits of the harvest, the play concludes with a bitter harvest for the Mundy sisters.

“Epicentre Theatre Company creates theatre by the community for the community, and that’s what the Spring Festival is about – celebrating and enjoying our local talent and culture,” said Willoughby Mayor, Pat Reilly.
