Residents can get down to the serious business of play at the newly upgraded Sutherland Park, Sutherland Road, Chatswood.

The landscape improvement works to Sutherland Park were completed following community consultation and will entice children and adults alike.

A new double swing, a spinner, two spring rockers and a spiral slide have been installed in the playground and a new softfall surface ensures safer play. There is also an open grassy area for informal ball games, running about and picnics. New paths form a circuit around the park which can be used as a children’s trike track.

Improvements have also been made to the passive recreation areas. There is new seating, picnic settings, a bubbler and a new understorey of flowering plants. Some of the new picnic settings and seats are located next to the trike track as well as near the new single plate barbeque.

An exercise station made of recycled materials has also been installed. The facility provides equipment and safe use instructions for warming up, stretching, muscle development, cardiovascular fitness and cooling down.

“I’m so pleased to be able to invite residents to enjoy the newly upgraded facilities at Sutherland Park. A real sense of pride in and ownership of the facilities is developing within our community. Residents living nearby have even volunteered their time to ensure the newly established plants receive enough water during their establishment phase,” said Willoughby Mayor, Pat Reilly.

“The upgrades have been possible thanks to funding from Willoughby City Council and assistance from two government grants – one from the Department of Local Government and the other from NSW Sport and Recreation,” he said.

Further tree works will be carried out in stages in order to further enhance the park and its surrounding environment.

Sutherland Park, traditionally inhabited by the Cammeraygal people, is named after the Honourable John Sutherland (1816-1889), a builder, grazier, businessman and politician who served as the Mayor of the Municipal Council of Sydney in 1861 and as a Member of NSW Parliament from 1860 to 1889.
