Willoughby Recognised in Sustainable Cities

30 July 2010

Willoughby City Council is delighted to announce their ClimateClever campaign is the winner of the Department of Environment, Climate Change and Water, NSW Environmental Education Award in the 2010 Keep Australia Beautiful NSW Sustainable Cities Awards.

The awards were presented last night at a ceremony in the City of Canada Bay.

The Sustainable Cities program is a Keep Australia Beautiful NSW initiative to recognise outstanding environmental initiatives implemented by local government authorities, schools and community groups and businesses while raising public awareness of a range of environmental issues affecting metropolitan NSW.

Peter McLean, CEO of Keep Australia Beautiful NSW, said the North Shore had a strong presence in this year’s Sustainable Cities Award program, particularly in the DECCW Environmental Education category.

“A wide variety of projects from across the North Shore region were submitted and were highly successful, demonstrating that the region is very actively participating in sustainable practises. I applaud all those from the North Shore that were involved in these projects,” said Keep Australia Beautiful CEO, Peter McLean.

“The Environmental Education category was particularly competitive and the top two entries came from the North Shore. Well done,” he said.

Willoughby Mayor Pat Reilly was delighted with the win.

“The ClimateClever campaign has only been up and running for just over one year. I’m thrilled that we can already claim to be award winners in creating a sustainable city,” said Willoughby Mayor, Pat Reilly.

“This campaign aims to educate and empower our whole community to act on climate change and take practical steps to reducing our impacts on the environment. I would like to thank all our residents, schools and businesses that have participated in ClimateClever events, workshops and programs,” he said.

Part of the e.restore program, Willoughby City Council’s ClimateClever program is assisting the community in reducing its carbon footprint by 15 per cent by 2015 and is also working to reduce the council’s carbon footprint by 50 per cent by the end of this year.

Residents can participate in a range of practical, sustainable living workshops, attend climate change focussed events or visit the ClimateClever Shop at www.climateclevershop.com.au to access discounted rainwater tanks, solar and heat pump hot water systems and solar power systems.

Willoughby City Council facilitates a range of programs for small, medium and large local businesses to help them reduce their impact on the environment and save money.

ClimateClever Schools encourages energy and resource efficiency and sustainable practices at school. The program includes an assistance scheme to help schools achieve their aims and provides energy assessments which can assist schools in the development of their SEMP and National Solar Schools Program application.
