“An outdoor screen proposed for the open space area on The Concourse will act as a modern day beacon drawing people to the site,’ said Willoughby Mayor, Pat Reilly.
The screen, a new addition to The Concourse designed by The Concourse architects Francis-Jones Morehen Thorp, will be situated on the upper grass area of The Concourse and will include a main screen viewed from the outdoor grassed area and the grand stairs leading to the Concert Hall. A smaller rear screen will be able to be viewed from the hotel courtyard area.
“The screen will offer an extra element to The Concourse furthering its position as a leading entertainment destination,” said Willoughby Mayor, Pat Reilly. “The screen will allow a range of free entertainment to be offered to the community such as digital art, open air cinema, live sporting events such as the World Cup and Olympics, important national events and live broadcasts of sold out performances held in the Performing Arts Centre on The Concourse,” said Willoughby Mayor, Pat Reilly.
“The screenings will offer an additional feature to The Concourse that will draw even more people to the site. This additional activity will complement the offering of the Concourse which will provide a variety of entertainment and performances, new dining and retail spaces and the perfect environment for reading and learning in the 5 000 square metre library,” said the Mayor.
The proposed screen would be composed of a series of modular LED units and run on GreenPower. If approved, the screen will be incorporated into the public lift which provides access from the car park to The Concourse.
“Set to open late 2011, the venue destined to be the new gathering place for the northern Sydney region will rival Sydney’s leading performing arts and entertainment centres. Once open performances will include local, national and international artists and groups ranging across all genres,” said Mayor Reilly.
When the facility opens in late 2011, it will continue the site’s century-old tradition of performing arts, community celebrations and civic ceremonies. The precinct will incorporate a new Concert Hall, Theatre, Civic Hall and Studio. There you can enjoy music, art, drama, and dance, taking advantage of new state-of-the-art performance and rehearsal spaces. Chatswood Library, the state’s busiest library, will become one of its largest. Expansive, light-filled and tranquil, it will provide the perfect environment for reading and learning.
A new restaurant and cafe strip, shops, and an open outdoor meeting space will breathe new life into the Chatswood CBD, by day and night.
