The second program of the Willoughby Symphony Orchestra’s 2010 season will feature the treasured Brandenburg Concerti of JS Bach. Benjamin Dollman, a baroque specialist and violinist with the Australian Brandenburg Orchestra, will lead the Willoughby Symphony Orchestra in a program of the Brandenburg Concerti featuring a stunning collection of Bach’s Concertos 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6 instrumental works.

Bach’s Concertos showcase virtuosic solo passages from different musicians including a grand trumpet, string instruments, recorders, a flute and violin. Musicians and audiences alike can lose themselves completely in the incredible range of emotions captured in the music with heart wrenchingly beautiful slow movements and lilting dance-like melodies.

The Brandenburg Concertos are written for different groups of instruments, mostly strings and occasionally wind instruments. The second, fourth and fifth concertos feature particular instruments, the second being renowned for its fiendishly high and difficult trumpet part, and the fifth for its equally demanding harpsichord solo. The first, third and sixth concertos use each instrument more equally and are very inventive with their use of imitation between parts.

“The At Brandenburg’s Gate concert is set to captivate audiences,” said Willoughby Mayor, Pat Reilly.

“The Willoughby Symphony Orchestra’s 2010 concert series will bring about another wonderful year of compelling and enthralling concerts,” said the Mayor.

In 1721, Bach sent the collection of Concertos to Christian Ludwig, the Margrave of Brandenburg, in his bid to present a humble dedication. Despite his efforts, the Margrave never acknowledged or thanked Bach for the gift, let alone sent any payment for the manuscripts.
