Visitors to this year’s Royal Easter Show are invited to venture to Bushcare’s Great Aussie Backyard stall to find out how to create a haven for wildlife and to discover the existing biodiversity on their back doorstep, 9am to 9:30pm, Thursday 1 April to Wednesday 14 April, next to the Flower and Garden Pavilion, Riverina Avenue, Sydney Olympic Park, Homebush Bay.
A range of engaging environmental activities and performances will take place over the two week period, including:
• A display of wildlife you might encounter in or near your Sydney backyard from the Australian Walkabout Park;
• Up close and personal sessions with previously injured animals cared for by the Sydney Metropolitan Wildlife Service;
• Discussions and displays of invertebrates living in our creeks from Streamwatch water bug experts;
• Aboriginal story telling conducted by the Aboriginal Heritage Office;
• Bush poetry readings and ways to reduce your carbon footprint in your own backyard presented by Willoughby City Council.
Community nurseries from all over the Sydney region will display native garden plants suitable for particular areas that can be planted in residential gardens to improve native plant biodiversity and provide habitat for native wildlife.
Bushcare staff and volunteers from more than 20 organisations and authorities across Sydney will be staffing the stall, providing practical information and advice for creating bush-friendly backyards.
Visitors to the stall can also find out about joining a volunteer Bushcare group, walking tracks in the region, upcoming workshops and identifying native plants and weeds, amongst a host of other topics.
“Willoughby City Council is thrilled to be involved with Sydney’s Royal Easter Show this year. The Bushcare stall will be bigger and better than ever. It will showcase what local councils can offer their communities and provides practical ideas for supporting our local flora and fauna,” said Willoughby Mayor, Pat Reilly.
“The message this year is incredibly important and the Great Aussie Backyard stall will help Sydney-siders make a difference, starting with their own backyards,” he said.
The Bushcare display is produced by Willoughby City Council in conjunction with the Sydney Metropolitan Catchment Management Authority.
