Willoughby City Council invites lovers and lovers of poetry to a very special, heartfelt bush poetry reading event this Valentines Day, 6pm to 8pm, Sunday 14 February, Henry Lawson Cave, Bicentennial Reserve, Small Street, Willoughby.
Willoughby City Council bushland staff member Don Swonnell, well-known Sydney actor, Peter Carmody along with violinist, Marcus Holden will deliver wonderful poetry readings of love and will tell humorous historical yarns about Henry Lawson and his time spent writing poetry in the cave and the surrounding local area. Famed bird mimic, Tim Thurston will also entertain with his amazing native bird calls.
“This year marks the thirteenth anniversary of the bi-annual bush poetry readings at Henry Lawson Cave. Valentines Day is the perfect occasion to recall the beautiful poems of Henry Lawson and enjoy the surrounds of Flat Rock Gully with someone special,” said Willoughby Mayor, Pat Reilly.
“I would like to invite attendees, young and old to join in and present poems of their choice on the night. I’m sure a love poem by the flickering light of the campfire wouldn’t go astray,” he said.
Poetry lovers walking to the event from Northbridge will also be able to test out the newly upgraded track that connects to Flat Rock Gully from Calbina Road. The track has been resurfaced and is now more even to allow easy pedestrian access. There is now a causeway crossing and more than 50 new steps to make for an easier walk through the beautiful bushland of Bicentennial Reserve.
Bring a rug or camp chair to sit on and your own refreshments, or simply bring a mug for billy tea.
Henry Lawson Cave is located behind the Willoughby Leisure Centre, accessible via Small Street, Willoughby. Head to the rear car park and down the bush steps to the cycling and walking track and follow the signs.
