Willoughby residents urged to ‘get on your bike’

02 September 2010

Willoughby residents are being encouraged to get mobile on two wheels this September, with numerous bicycle workshops and ride days being held as part of this year’s Willoughby Spring Festival.

“Get on your bike,” enthused Willoughby Mayor, Pat Reilly. “Cycling is a great way to enjoy our natural surrounds, get exercise, and commute in a greener way.”

“Apart from helping locals to discover the joys of riding bikes, the Spring Festival cycling events are designed to build rider confidence and teach people how to maintain their bikes. We also want more Willoughby residents to receive the health and environmental benefits cycling offers,” he added.

Two Bicycle Maintenance Workshops ($45 per person) will be held at Renegade Cycles (43-45 Burns Bay Road) in Lane Cove on Thursday 23 and Thursday 30 September. The three hour workshops (6pm – 9pm) will teach participants how to change tyre tubes, adjust gears and brakes, and care for the bike’s drive train. Bikes will be provided and participants are encouraged to leave their best clothes at home!

A Basic Bicycle Skills Workshop will be held on Saturday 25 September from 10am to 4pm at Bicentennial Reserve, Small Street, Willoughby. The free event is for adults and children over the age of 10, and aims to build rider confidence while discovering local cycleways. Participants must bring a roadworthy bike and helmet.

The Intermediate Cycling Skills Workshop is for cyclist keen to commute to work and other places through traffic. It will teach participants how to ride confidently in traffic and how to pick safe roads to ride on – whether to work, the shops or to visit family and friends. The free workshop will be held on Saturday 25 September from 1.30pm to 4.30pm at Bicentennial Reserve, Small Street, Willoughby.  Participants must bring a roadworthy bike and helmet.

The NSW Bike Week Try-Cycle Family Fun Day offers a great day out on Saturday 25 September from 10am to 4pm at Hallstrom Park, Small Street, Willoughby. Families can bring their own bikes, or hire them, while they discover local bike paths, gain advice on different types of bikes and take guided bike tours around the area. There will even be street-wise cycle safety games for the kids, so they learn road rules while having fun and win prizes and giveaways.

Bookings for all cycle events are essential on 9777 7706.
