Safety Around Schools campaign launched
04 February 2009
In a bid to improve the safety of children and the entire school community, North Shore Councils will launch the new school year with a school safety campaign reminding parents and carers of the dangers of parking illegally and speeding around schools.
The Safety Around Schools campaign will target commuters near primary schools within the Willoughby, Ku-ring-gai, North Sydney and Mosman local government area.
The campaign aims to raise awareness and remind motorists to keep clear of traffic in and around school zones, park legally and safely slow down and stick to the 40km/h speed limit when travelling through school zones, Monday to Friday, 8am to 9:30am and 2:30pm to 4pm.
Parents are encouraged to comply with the parking regulations around schools and consider parking further away. By walking to the gate to pick up their children from school, parents ensure a safer environment for all children in the school zone and also may avoid parking and speeding offences.
“Parking offences around school zones can range from $243 to $324 with the loss of two to four demerit points, and speeding fines can range from $ 135 to $1784 with the loss of four to seven demerit points and in some cases an automatic loss of license,” said Sergeant Glen Marks, Traffic Supervisor, Chatswood Police Station.
A parking booklet, outlining penalties for parking illegally, will be distributed to all parents and carers to encourage them to park safely and legally around schools. Other resources from the Roads and Traffic Authority will also be available to schools to help provide up to date road safety information to school communities.
“It is imperative that parents and all motorists comply with the road safety rules around schools to ensure the safety of children,” said Willoughby Mayor, Pat Reilly. “By banding together amid the road safety campaign, Willoughby, Ku-ring-gai, North Sydney and Mosman Councils are providing parents and carers with a strong road safety message,” he said.
