The Savoy Arts Company presents W.S Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan’s opera comic classic, The Sorcerer, an actioned packed and twisted tale of love set in mid nineteenth century England, in a coastal village of Ploverleigh. Season commences at Willoughby’s Zenith Theatre, Friday 7 August.
The Sorcerer, a two-act comic opera, presents audiences with a slightly twisted and unconventional tale of love, when Alexis, the son of the local baronet, decides to play cupid and appoints a reputable sorcerer from London to concoct a love potion.
Alexis embarks on his mission of love when he decides that the people of Ploverleigh should experience the same happiness of love he shares with his blue blooded beauty, Aline.
The plot heightens when Alexis and the Sorcerer sneakily add a few drops of potion to the tea served at a wedding breakfast, only to find the potion causes bizarre side effects, putting village’s in a deep trance and compelling them fall in love with the first person they see.
“The Sorcerer is a thrilling two act comic opera classic that will wow and entertain audiences,” said Willoughby Mayor, Pat Reilly.
The Sorcerer was first produced at the Opéra Comique, a charming little theatre in the Strand, in 1877. The original run of the piece was a satisfactory 175 performances, enough of a success to encourage W.S Gilbert and Arthur Sullivan to continue to collaborate.
The Zenith Theatre’s intimate surrounds and close proximity to the Chatswood CBD, makes it an idyllic venue for a range of entertaining shows and performances. For a full list of upcoming events visit www.willoughby.nsw.gov.au or join our e.newsletter to receive regular updates.
