Enjoy bush poetry at dusk, Billy Tea ‘round the camp fire and good old Aussie damper from 6pm to 8pm, Sunday 8 February at Henry Lawson Cave, Flat Rock Gully, Bicentennial Park, Small St, Naremburn.
Willoughby City Council bushland staff member Don Swonnell, well-known Sydney actor, Peter Carmody with guitarist, Dave Seeney and violinist, Mark Holden will deliver wonderful poetry readings and tell humorous historical yarns about Henry Lawson and his time spent writing poetry in the cave and the surrounding local area. Guest artist Tim Thurston will also entertain with his amazing native bird calls.
Now in its 12th year, the event integrates the community’s rich appreciation of local history and the beautiful natural landscape.
“When the first poetry reading took place here in 1997 the bushland site of Flat Rock Gully was covered in noxious weeds. Today we are able to enjoy a beautiful restored native park thanks to bush regeneration works performed by Willoughby City Council and volunteers,” said Willoughby Mayor, Pat Reilly.
“The outdoor amphitheatre is an ideal location for this literary event, highlighting not only the beauty of the Australian landscape, but also the spirit of Henry Lawson,” he said.
Bring a rug or camp chair to sit on and your own refreshments, or simply bring a mug for Billy Tea. Attendees, young and old are also invited to join in and present poems.
Henry Lawson Cave is located behind the Willoughby Leisure Centre, accessible via Small St, Willoughby. Head to the rear car park and down the bush steps to the cycling and walking track and follow the signs.
Phone 9777 7755 to book or in the instance of wet weather phone after 3:30pm for alternative arrangements (alternative event date Sunday 15 February).
