Cut Carbon this Year with a Free Home Energy Assessment

Willoughby City Council is encouraging residents to reduce their household’s carbon footprint in 2009 by offering free home assessments to assist Willoughby residents to reduce their home energy bills and slash greenhouse gas emissions.

Expert Gas Busters will visit Willoughby homes to conduct free assessments. As part of the service, residents will receive a report detailing the household’s carbon footprint, an action plan highlighting areas of potential savings and a range of free energy saving devices such as compact fluorescent globes, a shower timer and a water saving shower head.

The Gas Busters have the goal of slashing our community’s greenhouse gas emissions by helping educate residents about emissions around the home and actions they can take to reduce them.

“We have a vision of Willoughby becoming one of the leading communities in Sydney and Australia in reducing our carbon footprint. Together we can lead the way and make Willoughby a community committed to reducing the potential impacts of climate change,” said Willoughby Mayor, Pat Reilly.

“This service is being provided free of charge by council and will provide households with expert advice to help reduce emissions and save money on energy bills,” he said.

The program will focus on practical steps residents can take to reduce their footprint. One such step is to switch to cold water for washing clothes which can save more than $60 in electricity bills and 225kg of greenhouse gases each year.

As part of council’s school program, free energy assessments will be conducted at school and schools will be assisted in developing an environmental management plan.

Willoughby City Council is developing a comprehensive package of initiatives to help residents take action to reduce their carbon footprint. The free home assessments is the first of these initiatives.
