Cleland Park, located corner Hampden Road and Barton Road, Artarmon, was reopened 19 December 2008 after completion of landscape improvements.

In the play area, three swings have been updated, two spinners and a kangaroo spring rocker have been installed and the under-surface has been upgraded.

Other features of the park now include level grass terraces, a free to use electric barbeque, six new park benches and three picnic tables which provide a setting for family and group social and recreational activities. These opportunities for socialising are particularly important as the park is surrounded by medium density housing.

Sandstone flagging from the original pathways has been reused to create smooth flagging inlays in the new realigned pathways, and in the surrounds of the barbeque and seating areas.

Park lighting has been improved, including placement of electrical cables underground which were previously overhead, a bubbler has been installed and the main entrance has been upgraded.

The new garden beds are full of drought tolerant, colourful plants. Many have pink flowers or pink new growth, and flower at different times of the year to provide year round interest. The plants have a variety of growth habits including upright and strappy, dense, tufted and cascading. Rosemary grows beside the barbeque and several trees have been planted to provide summer shade.

“Cleland Park is a wonderful venue for children, families and community members. The park provides a beautiful outdoor setting filled with colourful plants and landscapes, a playground for children, barbeque facility and seating areas ideal for family picnics,” said Willoughby Mayor, Pat Reilly.

Cleland Park was declared a public park in 1908 at the urging of Alderman William Cleland junior, Mayor of Willoughby, 1906-07, after whom the park is named. There are six tennis courts run by Cleland Tennis Club and Artarmon Tennis Club, a car park and Artarmon District Girl Guides Hall also located in the park.
