Judges select works for inclusion in the 2009 Willoughby Sculpture Prize exhibition
12 January 2009
From more than 180 entries received from artists across Australia, judges have selected 48 sculptures to be exhibited in the 2009 Willoughby Sculpture Prize.
Judges selected works based on both creative innovation and response to the 2009 theme to rethink, reduce, reuse and recycle.
Canberra artist Geoff Farquhar-Still was selected for the site specific project with a multimedia work titled Reverberation. This will be located in a darkened space inside the heritage listed incinerator and encourage visitors to consider the history of the site as both an iconic Walter Burley Griffin building and an Incinerator. It is also aimed to link the past to the present.
“The Willoughby Sculpture Prize gives the community and visitors to the exhibition the rare opportunity to view a diverse range of artworks of a very high standard by artists from all over Australia,” said Willoughby Mayor, Pat Reilly.
Sculptures will be on display between 26 September and 5 October 2009, inside the Incinerator building, 2 Small Street, Willoughby, and throughout surrounding parklands.
The Willoughby Sculpture Prize receives generous support from Willoughby City Council, Sheads First National Real Estate, Chatswood Chase and Chatswood Toyota.
