Mayor Swears for White Ribbon Day

Willoughby Mayor, Pat Reilly swears his oath to end men’s violence against women |
On Wednesday 25 November, Willoughby Mayor, Pat Reilly swore for White Ribbon Day - the United Nation’s International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women. He swore never to commit, never to excuse, and never to remain silent about violence against women.
The Mayor commended the White Ribbon Day campaign and swore his oath online at www.myoath.com.au. The website and oath program have been set up to urge all ten million men and boys in Australia to swear they will make efforts to end men’s violence against women.
“While people may have differences, they need not be settled with violence. Abuse against women is not only cowardly, but shows a drop in the progress of standards,” said Willoughby Mayor, Pat Reilly.
“I believe the White Ribbon Day oath gives people an opportunity to reflect that it is not unmanly to walk away from a frustrating situation that could lead to an altercation. The simple step of walking away to calm down can prevent the physical, sexual or psychological abuse of another. I urge all the males in our community to join me in swearing they will actively promote a culture of gender equality and respect,” he said.
According to the White Ribbon Day website, one in three Australian women experience physical or sexual violence in their lifetime.
Willoughby City Council is currently displaying artworks by the Lower North Shore Domestic Violence Network that highlight the impacts of abuse against women and children and the ways to move forward. The display is located in the ground floor foyer exhibition space of the council administration building, 31 Victor Street, Chatswood.
