25 February 2009
Willoughby City Council has raised more than $45 000 for the Victorian Bushfire appeal and pledged a further $50 000 in staff resources and equipment to assist in the rebuilding process.
The donation includes an astounding contribution of $20 689 from the Willoughby community collected by volunteer Willoughby City Council staff over two days in Chatswood Mall and at council libraries and community centres. Council staff a raised a further donation of $1 086 through a staff collection. The $21 775 donation will be provided to the Red Cross Victorian Bush Fire Appeal.
The council has pledged an additional $25 000 cash donation to the Local Government Bushfire Recovery Fund, a council to council fund established by the Municipal Association of Victoria. The fund ensures contributions are directly spent on municipal efforts to rebuild communities, their infrastructure and facilities within the critically effected council areas.
In addition $50 000 in staff resources and equipment will be provided by Willoughby City Council to assist in rebuilding roads, community facilities and infrastructure through the Local Government and Shires Association and the Institute of Public Works Engineering Australia.
“Willoughby City Council staff and the local community who have united together raising a remarkable donation for the Victorian communities are to be commended enormously for their effort and kindness,” said Willoughby Mayor Pat Reilly.
“Willoughby City Council will now work with the Local Government and Shires Association to provide staff and equipment to assist with the major task of rebuilding the roads and infrastructure of Melbourne’s tragedy stricken local council areas,” said the Mayor.
