Handel - Messiah
Join Willoughby Symphony for a fresh, technically polished interpretation of Handel’s best known composition, Messiah. As many times as Messiah is performed, Handel’s music retains its strengths: a keen sensitivity to the text, an affinity for the natural gifts of each voice, and a satisfying balance among solo, choral and orchestral sections.
In contrast to today’s stirring forces, the work was originally performed by a choir of just twenty male voices. Yet the performance aroused controversy because some thought it irreverent to sing religious text in the concert hall. King George II, however, was so impressed that he stood up during the ‘Hallelujah Chorus’, obliging the rest of the audience to stand with him and beginning a tradition that is still followed today.
