Corelli - Concerto Grosso, Op. 6 No. 8 Quantz - Flute Concerto Puccini - I crisantemi (The Crysanthemums) Vivaldi - The Four Seasons
Reconnect with the simple pleasure of listening to exquisite music in this program of orchestral favourites. Willoughby Symphony’s Concertmaster David Saffir steps up to the podium to introduce first the “Father of the Concerto Grosso”, Antonio Corelli. Corelli’s work features the most delightful interplay of instruments – a musical conversation of exquisite refinement. The spotlight then moves to WSO’s Principal Flautist Katrina Kelvin who will perform Quantz’s elegant Flute Concerto. Katrina is an audience favourite, and this concerto will display Katrina’s sparkling musical personality in all of its effervescence.
The rich timbre of massed strings in Puccini’s serenely beautiful musical poem, Chrysanthemums, provides the perfect Italian contrast to what follows in this fascinating musical evening: a performance of the enduring programmatic triumph, The Four Seasons, by Corelli’s most famous student (and history’s next great composer of concerti grossi, Antonio Vivaldi). The sensational prize-winning Chinese-Australian violinist, Kylie Liang, will perform Vivaldi’s inspired set of brilliantly conceived concertos in a performance that will be brilliantly memorable.
