Many routes into and around the Willoughby LGA have seen an increase in traffic in recent years. Much of the traffic traveling through the Willoughby LGA is heading towards Sydney CBD, North Sydney or Parramatta, although a considerable amount is also local traffic.

Due to congestion on major roads, some drivers will take short cuts through residential streets. This can cause concerns about speeding and safety on these back streets. Council employs local area traffic management schemes, such as speed bumps, angles slow points (chicanes), roundabouts, road narrowings, pedestrian refuges and turning bans with a view to reduce speeds, lower traffic volumes and improve safety.
To determine if a street requires traffic management, Council undertakes surveys of vehicle speeds and traffic volumes, as well as analysing accident data. Plans for appropriate solutions are developed. Options are then discussed with residents prior to seeking approval through the Local Traffic Committee.
Rather than installing traffic calming devices, residents often request that roads are closed or half-closed, however this cannot be done without RTA consent. Before a road is closed, the RTA together with Council must carefully consider the impacts that this closure will have on surrounding streets.
