Social Plans provide an overview of the local community; the people who live there and their needs. Social or community planning aims to identify and address crucial gaps in service provision and help Council to make educated plans for the future. The Department of Local Government (DLG) requests that Councils address the needs of key target groups to ensure access and equity across the board. It is anticipated that the DLG will undertake a review of how social planning is approached by local governments. The DLG’s proposed Integrated Planning tool (due for launch in late 2008) will re-assess how we best identify social justice issues and areas of need within the overall framework of Council operations and reporting.
Council’s most recent Social Plans (2005 to 2009) involved more than thirty community consultations, including a phone survey, a youth survey, children’s forum and a service provider’s forum. The plans are due for review in 2009.
