Weeds can usually be controlled using simple bush regeneration techniques. Weeds thrive in disturbed soil, so these techniques aim to limit that disturbance.
Collecting all fruit and seed from weeds and then bagging and disposing of them through composting or vegetation bins will reduce the spread of weeds.
Willoughby City Council holds regular
BushCare Workshops for residents. These workshops include techniques for controlling invasive vines and woody weeds that require herbicide use. Anyone interested in learning correct weed removal techniques, particularly herbicide application, are very welcome to attend a workshop. If you would like more information about these workshops contact Council's Bushcare Co-ordinator on 9777 7718.
Hand Removal
To control small, soft weeds and seedlings of any weeds:
- Gently remove any seeds or fruits and carefully place them in a bag.
- Grasp the stem at ground level.
- Rock the plant backwards and forwards to loosen its roots, and pull gently.
- Carefully tap the roots to dislodge any soil. Replace the disturbed soil and pat it down.
Crowning
This is very effective on weeds that have underground reproductive systems such as rhizomes, bulbs, corms and tubers.
- First, remove and bag stems with seed and fruit.
- Grasp the leaves or stems together so that the base of the plant is visible.
- Insert a knife at an angle close to the crown (the base of the plant at soil level where the leaves and shoots meet the root system).
- Cut through all the roots around the crown.
- Remove the crown and put it in a bag.
Some weeds will require the use of herbicide to keep them until control. The following safety tips should always be observed when applying herbicide.
- Always read the label before opening the container, and follow any instructions.
- Wear protective clothing and gloves as directed on the label.
- Wash your hands before eating or smoking.
