The Compliance Unit makes sure that certain government acts and regulations are being followed out in the community. The people working in the Compliance Unit include Development Enforcement Officers, Rangers and Parking Enforcement Officers.

The day to day activities enforced by the Compliance Unit include:

• Unauthorised land use
• Unauthorised signage
• Unauthorised building work
• Stormwater pollution
• Backyard fires
• Littering
• Water restrictions
• Abandoned motor vehicles
• Removal of noxious weeds
• Inspections of heavy vehicles/enforcement of road weight limit restrictions
• Enforcement of parking restrictions
• Collection of stray dogs
• Control of barking dogs
• Removal of unauthorised obstructions from the roadway, footpath and nature strips (e.g. industrial waste bins and building materials)
• Reporting of smoky vehicles to the EPA.
• Restrictions in public reserves
• Breaches of Council's Tree & Bushland Preservation Order
• Removal of abandoned shopping trolleys
• Illegal smoking within enclosed public spaces

The Acts that the Unit is responsible for regulating includes the:

• Environmental Planning & Assessment Act, 1979
• Swimming Pools Act, 1992
• Local Government Act, 1993
• Roads Act, 1993
• Impounding Act, 1993
• Noxious Weeds Act, 1993
• Protection of the Environment Operations Act, 1997
• Companion Animals Act, 1998
• Smoke-Free Environment Act, 2000
• Road Transport (General) Act, 2005

The State Government has given the Compliance Unit the authority to make sure these Acts are observed. The Unit functions in order to keep the general public and the environment safe and healthy, to make sure resources are shared equally and used responsibly, and to encourage harmony between residents. It is made up of professionals from whom you can expect fair and consistent courtesy as they ensure that community standards are met.
