The Willoughby City Council Local Government Area has a considerable range of natural heritage places and items. However much has been lost, diminished and fragmented as a result of continuing development and urbanisation. The remaining bushland within the major reserves represents only 11.28% of the original vegetation cover. This bushland is comprised almost totally of sandstone gully, scarp and ridgetop vegetation and estuarine complex communities.
During the course of the Study, more than 1,600 private properties were surveyed in the two selected sample areas of Chatswood West and Castle Cove. A total of 264 properties have been scheduled as containing significant natural heritage items. Almost 90% of these property listings are in the Chatswood West area. Many of these properties contain more than one natural heritage item (eg. a group of remnant trees). There are a total of 841 individual natural heritage items listed in the schedules.
The Natural Heritage Register won a national award.
